A Most Unforgettable Anniversary!
We celebrated our 17th wedding anniversary during our cruise on Ursa Major in June 2009 and everybody on board celebrated with us…we were the only passengers on board the entire week!. Talk about service, there were 50% more crew members than guests. And what an enjoyable crew they were: Josh, the intrepid ship captain who so skillfully led us to see some of the most spectacular sites and wild animals and even flawlessly guided the Ursa Major through a breathtaking ice flow to get close to the Sawyer glacier; Emily, the First Mate and master naturalist, who kept us so informed about the flora and fauna we encountered and was our expert kayak teacher and guide; Kathy, chef extraordinary, who could turn out consistently exquisite, gourmet meals made many times from daily catches off the side of the boat in the smallest gallery ever.
There can be few better ways to really see Alaska than a cruise on the Ursa Major with Josh, Emily and Kathy. We were able to determine our own itinerary and activities each day cruising through the Inside Passage to see some of the most spectacular scenery and wild life imaginable. We saw whales “breaching” - leaping out of the water and slamming back on the surface - bears catching fish, harbor seals and their cubs lounging on ice bergs and eagles as numerous as sparrows. We fished, put out crab and shrimp pots, kayaked, bathed in natural sulfur hot springs, hiked through rain forests, watched porpoises “surf” on Ursa Major’s bow wake and engaged in fascinating conversations with Josh, Emily and Kathy. Did I mention there is nothing more romantic than ending your day with glacier ice in your “it’s 5 o’clock somewhere” cocktail hour?
The Ursa Major is perfect for traveling the Inside Passage. It is large enough to be very comfortable and stabile, yet small enough to get to areas where a standard cruise ship would never venture. Our cabin, lined with beautiful wood paneling, was clean, efficient, and quiet. The dining room is cozy and contains an elaborate sound system and the ship’s library containing the most informative books on Alaska, its history, landmarks, animals and plant life.
We cannot more highly recommend cruising on the Ursa Major and can hardly wait for our next cruise.

We can not give enough praise and thank yous for the wonderful treatment we received from Josh, Emily and Kathy on our Ursa Major cruise. All three were so attentive, considerate and thoughtful towards our every need and request. They seemed to anticipate our wants before we asked.
